. a woman named joe kelly had complained to the fbi with a series of harassing e-mails, they were trailed back to paula broadwell who saw kel as a rival. reports 20,000 e-mails between kelly and john allen. they have been handed over to the pentagon where they are being analyzed. i interviewed general petraeus and general alan several times. paula broadwell joined me for a conversation early this year. joining me from washington d.c., davidic nake a column else for "the washington post" and martha raddatz a senior affairs correspondent with abc news. two cbs colleagues, norah o'donnell my cohost and john miller correspondent at cbs news wh is frequently with me on cbs this morning. i'm please to do have all of them here. we'll be joined by norah and john in just a moment. martha tell me about general petraeus. do you know him. what is it about this story that surprises you most? >> well, i have known general petraeus and covered him in war zones for about a decade and what surprised me most is he seems like a man who is so disciplined and so careful about his image andbout his retation t

important thing is how the investigation is expanding. we went to bed, thinking the f.b.i. investigation ended and then we hear the f.b.i. was going back to broadwell's house, paula broadwell's house, petraeus' mistress in north carolina. we don't know what that is all about. then we hear shortly after that, that general john allen, the top u.s. commander in afghanistan, who was here in washington preparing for his confirmation hearings for his next job at the supreme allied commanderrer in europe, the confirmation hearings are on hold and he is now implicated in this controversy, because of 30,000 pages of e-mails to jill kelly, who is the woman who launched this investigation. so it really keeps unraveling. it's like an onion you keep rolling back. we also need to look at the contentious custody battle that jill kelly's sister was involved in. we now understand that petraeus and allen both wrote letters o, asking the judge to show leniency to kelly's sister. was there undue influence used by the two men for these wome women? and was there, were there any laws broken? it just keeps gett

says the fbi uncovered between 20 and 30,000 pages of potentially between allen and jill kelly. the woman who triggered the petraeus probe after getting threatening e-mails from his mistress, paula broadwell. >> get this. had reported getting harassing emails from another woman, paula broadwell. the f.b.i. investigation that followed uncovered broadwell's affair with petraeus. but according to the newest revelations, agents also found extensive contacts between kelley and general allen. the f.b.i. notifieded the pentagon on sunday. last night spokesman george little read a statement from defense secretary leon panetta on a flight to australia. >> today the secretary directed that the matter be referred to the inspector general of the department of defense for investigation. it is now in the hands of the department of the secretary-general. >> brown: early news accounts said allen and kelley exchanged 20,000-30,000 pages of emails and other documents over the last two years. for part of that time the general served as deputy commander at u.s. central command faced at the air force base in tampa. jill kelley and her hus ban often organized social events for the military. one senior defense official said today that the emails between allen and kelley were mostly routine and involved planning for parties

we know about the time line of how the events unfolded. back in early june the fbi began investigating what it-described as menacing e-mails sent anonymously to a woman close to petraeus. well, the e-mails allegedly came from paula broadwell who the fbi later discovered was having an affair with the cia director. well, the fbi wrapped its investigation on november 2nd after it interviewed petraeus and broadwell. but "the new york times" reports the fbi concluded there was no evidence petraeus committed any crime or breached any security problem. on election day the fbi notified james clapper, he's the director of national intelligence, about the investigation. the next day he told people in the white house. that was clapper. but the president wasn't informed until the following day, november 8th. lawmakers have expressed anger they weren't informed earlier about the investigation. here is dianne feinstein who chairs the senate intelligence committee today. >> this thing just came so fast and so hard and since then it's been like peeling an onion. every day another peel co

people are saying nothing is quite as absurd as the pandora's box opened by the fbi investigation into subsequent resignation of retired four star general david petraeus and it may have claimed another high-ranking military official, commander of the forces in afghanistan, john allen. florida socialite jill kelley complained about harassing e-mails and contacted a friend at the fbi. the account was found to have belonged to paula broadwell. she was given access to david petraeus. locate the was evidence of an affair between petraeus and miss broadwell. the information was leak and petraeus resigned. as more information trickled out, the story got crazier. the harassing e-mails revealed to be not so threatening. the investigation moved forward because of kel little's friendship with the fbi agent she contacted to complain about the e-mails. a friendship that involved the agent's sharing photo of himself. these photos caused the agent to be remove and launched an investigation into his own actions. then this mornin
